Calpe: The Ultimate Cycling Destination in Spain

Cycling in Calpe and the surrounding area for me offers the ultimate cycling destination in Spain. Having toured the entire length of Spain including the Balearics I fell in love with Calpe. So much so that I decided to buy an apartment and make Calpe my second home.

Calpe is a charming coastal town located on the Costa Blanca in Spain. It boasts breathtaking landscapes, cyclist-friendly infrastructure, and a year-round Mediterranean climate. Calpe stands out as the ultimate paradise for cycling enthusiasts. In this blog, we will explore why Calpe is hailed as the greatest place to cycle in Spain.

Varied and Scenic Routes

Calpe offers an abundance of varied and scenic routes that cater to cyclists of all levels. From challenging mountain climbs to leisurely coastal rides, you’ll find an array of options to suit your preferences. The iconic climb of the Coll de Rates with its stunning vistas and hairpin bends, is a must-ride climb. There are also a number of lesser-known climbs such as the Sierra de Bernia and Val d’ebo. In my mind, I would argue that these provide more stunning views. If you prefer a more relaxed ride, the coastal roads offer beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Cycling Infrastructure

One of the reasons Calpe stands out as a top cycling destination is its cyclist-friendly infrastructure. The town has invested in developing a comprehensive network of well-maintained cycling paths and lanes, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for cyclists. Whether you’re exploring the town or venturing into the surrounding countryside, you can navigate with ease and peace of mind.

Ideal Climate

Calpe boasts a pleasant Mediterranean climate, making it a year-round cycling paradise. With mild winters and long, sunny summers, you can pedal through its scenic landscapes at any time of the year. Spring and autumn are particularly popular seasons, offering milder temperatures and less tourist traffic, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the cycling experience.

Training Ground for Professionals

Calpe has become a sought-after training ground for professional cycling teams from around the world. The combination of challenging terrain, excellent weather conditions, and top-notch facilities has attracted many pro teams to set up their training camps in Calpe. You might even catch a glimpse of renowned cyclists honing their skills as you pedal through the town’s cycling routes.

Cycling-Friendly Culture

Calpe embraces a cycling-friendly culture that adds to its allure as a premier cycling destination. You’ll find a warm and welcoming community of cyclists, both locals and visitors, who share your passion for the sport.

My cycling career started in 2005 when I purchased my first road bike and I was immediately hooked. Since then I have completed numerous cycling challenges including Ironman, Lands’ End to John O Groats, Mt Ventoux (all 3 ascents), London to Paris, the BBAR challenge which included a 12hour TimeTrial and more recently the Mallorca 312.
