Coming from a non-sporty background I became overweight and unhealthy in my teens. Realising that I had to do something about it I tried a number of activities but nothing clicked until I purchased my first road bike. This was back in 2005 and I was immediately hooked.
After working for BT for many years I decided that in 2012 I wanted to pursue a different career and finally do something that I was passionate about. Initially going into the retail side of cycling I soon realised that I wanted to share my knowledge and passion for cycling. This was initially achieved through bike fitting and led onto wanting to help others to achieve their goals through coaching.
The Birth of Ride Harder
Here at Ride Harder, we inspire cyclists with the tools, knowledge and support to train smarter and ride faster. Through the bike fitting process, I have improved the comfort, and performance of hundreds of riders. My group-coaching programme has educated riders of all abilities with many moving onto my individual coaching services. I am passionate about making riders faster on the bike from whatever level they are starting from.
In 2019 I joined the Factor Bikes UK team at its brand new Customer Experience Centre in Hethel, near Norwich, Norfolk as their Resident Retul bike fitter. Unlike most in the industry, Factor is the sole owner of the Factor production facility and author of each and every Factor bicycle. It’s this steadfast commitment to in-house design, testing and production that creates an environment in which inspiration becomes an essential component of perfection.
Perfection doesn’t occur by accident or luck. Instead, it’s the product of personally and obsessively overseeing every detail, no matter how small.
I will continue my independent fitting and building the Ride Harder academy along with growing my coaching knowledge and experience to share with my many coached athletes and followers.

“I do not usually write reviews however, I cannot praise James enough for a recent bike fit I had at his new and very smart base in Factor Bikes, Hethel. He has finally ended months of agonising sit bone issues and lower back pain. The time he took with me and the detail he went into trying to establish the root cause of the problem was crazy but he worked it out and it worked! two weeks on and I have just completed a relatively hard and lengthy climbing route in Kent and had no problems with either sit bone or lower back pain. For the first time in a very long time, I was able to enjoy the ride. If you are having problems or just looking to get more comfortable on your bike then I recommend you call or e-mail Jim.”
“I used James for both of my bike fits. Fantastic service from James as well as knowledge, I would definitely recommend. I didn’t realise the importance of a bike fit, but it’s now something I wouldn’t compromise on, well worth the money. Thanks.”
“My hubby Lez had begun to suffer from knee pain on short climbs, so after trying several different seats and cleat positions, decided to seek professional advice. A quick Google search lead him to James at Rideharder and a Retul bike fit was booked and carried out. A couple of test rides following the fit showed that things had improved, and 2 days later Lez climbed the Alpe du Zwift with no knee pain at all. Fantastic friendly, and very effective service from James, in a homely atmosphere........a great cup of coffee is also available. This is probably the best money Lez has spent on his bike apart from buying the bike itself. Thanks, James. ”
“I have had two bike fittings of two separate bikes with James and both have made a positive difference. I have been riding my new bike for around a year and experiencing numerous niggles including lower back pain and wrist/elbow discomfort. James spent two hours with me and tweaked almost every part of my bike, no new parts just adjustments. The result was no pain in my arms or lower back on what was already a stressful long hill climb of a ride on the first ride out post bike fit. James also provided advice on my riding style and how to improve that as well as followed up with me how I felt the first ride out went? Great service and follow up support from someone who genuinely appreciates the custom! Thank you once again 👍”
“Being a first-timer on a training plan I had nothing to gauge it by. But after a steady start it gradually built up over the 16 weeks & it worked very well for me. I have definitely noticed the improvements & would thoroughly recommend this plan. Looking forward to summer 2020.”
“I started working with James at the very beginning of Ride Harder as I wanted to add some structure to my bike training through the winter as I moved towards Triathlon more seriously.I consider this one of the best decisions I could make, as James’ approach to the first of the Winter plans was superb and shows in the way it has grown to this point. My Triathlon path has developed through Ride Harder, as I became a part of the full coaching offered.During my time with James, I found him to be highly professional, massively knowledgeable, always looking to add to is knowledge, not afraid to make mistakes to grow and a great communicator. In addition to this, he has and still does remain a great source of advice and support to me and my endeavours for which I am very grateful.I am now self-coached but without the knowledge I built in the time is spent with RideHarder, I feel this would not be as successful as it has been.My season this year has seen me go to Challenge Roth and set a new PB of 10:32 at the Full Distance, something I am very proud of and feel I can improve further. One last point to add, James is also my bike fitter of choice. I feel this is not a one-off thing and having a consistent point to come back to has been great. Thanks for all of the support over the years Ride Harder!”
“I have been part of the Team Ride Harder coaching plan for three seasons now and cannot recommend it highly enough. Before I had a plan I just used to bike and whilst I could do this quite well and fast the sessions never had any structure and I didn't seem to improve. The plan means every session has a purpose and through regular testing I am able to make sure I continually improve.”
“I signed up with a single goal, to improve my fitness to improve my asthma control so that day to day life became easier. I've achieved so much more, my asthma is under the best control it has been for many years requiring significantly less drugs to achieve this. Another bonus is my running fitness has significantly improved and I can now regularly cycle with our faster club rides without being left behind. The plan definitely gets a thumbs up from me.”
“The Ride Harder training plan has given me the structure and discipline I needed to keep me focused throughout the long winter months sitting on the turbo and has helped me achieve my racing goals during the summer”
