The short answer

If you want one sentence: most UK club riders should spend between £400 and £700 on a direct-drive smart trainer, and the biggest gains come from the training you do on it, not the badge on the side.

If you have the money and the space, a smart bike is a genuinely different proposition — no wear on your own bike, nothing to set up, and it's ready the second you are. That's the argument for the Wattbike Atom, which I've owned since the original V1 launched and still use today.

Why train indoors at all?

A turbo trainer converts your bike into a stationary indoor bike. A smart bike replaces the bike entirely. Either way, the point is the same: controlled, repeatable training that isn't at the mercy of the weather, the traffic or the daylight.

That last part matters more than most riders admit. I coach people through a British winter every year, and the single biggest predictor of a good spring isn't how hard anyone trained in January — it's how many sessions they simply didn't miss. An indoor setup removes almost every excuse. No lights, no kit faff, no risk on an icy lane at 6am.

Is turbo training better than riding outside?

Not better — different, and more efficient per minute. Because there's no coasting, no junctions and no descending, an hour indoors with a structured session in it is worth roughly 1.5 hours of typical road riding in training terms. That's why a rider with two hours a week to train usually improves faster indoors, and why a rider with fifteen hours a week shouldn't live in the pain cave.

My honest split for most amateurs from November to February: two or three quality indoor sessions a week, and one longer outdoor ride at the weekend whenever the roads allow it.

How many hours indoors do you actually need?

Less than you think. Three sessions of 45–75 minutes, done properly, will hold or build fitness through a UK winter for the vast majority of club riders. Buying a £2,000 bike and doing two sessions a fortnight is a worse outcome than buying a £400 trainer and doing three a week.

Direct drive vs wheel-on: what's the difference?

A wheel-on trainer clamps your rear wheel against a roller. A direct-drive trainer replaces the rear wheel entirely — you take the wheel off and mount your bike on a cassette fitted to the trainer.

In 2026 there's very little reason to buy wheel-on. Direct-drive prices have fallen so far that a £370 direct-drive unit now outperforms a £250 wheel-on unit on every measure that matters. Wahoo has discontinued the Kickr Snap — you'll still see it on sale as run-out stock at £164.99, but it's a dead-end product. The category is quietly dying.

Buy wheel-on only if you genuinely need to fold it away in seconds, or you're on the tightest possible budget and can find one second-hand.

Do I need a smart trainer, or will a basic one do?

A "dumb" trainer gives you resistance and nothing else. A smart trainer measures your power and lets an app control the resistance for you. That second part is the whole game: it's what makes ERG mode work, and it's what turns a training plan into something you just follow rather than something you have to manage.

If you're training with any structure at all — and if you're reading this, you probably are — buy a smart trainer. A smart trainer is also the cheapest route into power-based training: you get a power number without buying a power meter for your bike.

What is ERG mode and should you use it?

ERG mode means the trainer holds a target wattage regardless of what gear you're in or how fast you pedal. Your session says 250 watts for 8 minutes, and the trainer makes you produce 250 watts for 8 minutes.

Use it for intervals, threshold work and anything where hitting a precise number matters. Turn it off for sprints, for anything under about 30 seconds, and for free-riding on Zwift, where the trainer should be responding to the gradient instead.

The thing nobody tells you: cheap trainers hold ERG badly. Average accuracy over an hour can look perfect while the second-by-second numbers swing wildly. That's the single most useful thing to know when comparing a £350 trainer to a £750 one.

What about rollers?

Rollers build brilliant bike handling and a smooth pedal stroke, and almost nothing else. They're a supplement, not an answer. If you want one indoor purchase, it isn't rollers.

Turbo trainer vs smart bike: which is right for you?

This is the real question for anyone with more than about £1,200 to spend, and most guides answer it badly — usually because they're published by someone who sells smart bikes.

The three questions that decide it

1. How many hours a week will you ride indoors? Under three hours, a trainer is plenty. Over six hours a week for four or five months a year, a smart bike starts to make hard financial sense on drivetrain wear alone.

2. Do you want your good bike sat in the spare room all winter? A trainer needs a bike on it. That's either your best bike, which then wears out indoors, or a second bike you have to own.

3. Does more than one person ride? Smart bikes adjust in seconds. Swapping a trainer between two bikes is a job.

When a smart bike is genuinely worth it

Here's the honest arithmetic. A hard winter of indoor training will get through a chain and take meaningful life out of a cassette and chainrings. Call it £80–£150 a year for a mid-range groupset, more for 12-speed electronic. Over five years, that's most of the gap between a good trainer and a mid-range smart bike — and it doesn't count your time, or the value of a bike that's always ready to ride.

Add the things that don't show up on a spreadsheet: no wheel to remove, no cassette compatibility to worry about, no bike to clean sweat off, and a footprint that's one tidy object rather than a bike parked in the corner of a room.

When it isn't — and what to buy instead

If you ride indoors twice a week from December to February, a smart bike is an expensive way to solve a problem you don't have. Buy a Wahoo Kickr Core 2 at around £449–£500 and spend the difference on a coach, a decent fan and a Zwift subscription. That combination will make you faster than the smart bike would.

The Wattbike Atom: my long-term verdict

I've had a Wattbike Atom since the original V1 launched, and it has been faultless. That's not a review-unit-for-six-weeks opinion — that's years of use, thousands of sessions, and it's still the thing I train on. So this section is longer than the others, because it's the one where I actually know what I'm talking about.

Current price: £2,249, down from £2,499 (checked 29 August 2026). Wattbike runs 0% APR finance, currently from around £94/month over 24 months.

Why I still rate it

It's accurate, and it stays accurate. ±1% is the claim, and independent testing backs it up — road.cc tested the current Atom against a Favero Assioma power meter and found roughly 1% difference. More importantly for a coach: it's factory calibrated and doesn't drift. I've never had to spin it down or second-guess a number. When an athlete's data comes off a Wattbike, I trust it.

It works with everything. This is the part that matters most and gets the least attention. The Atom broadcasts standard Bluetooth FTMS and ANT+, so it controls properly on TrainingPeaks Virtual, Zwift, TrainerRoad, Rouvy, FulGaz, MyWhoosh and Kinomap. You are not tied to one platform. If a platform doubles its price or stops suiting you, you take your bike with you. Compare that with some of the cheaper smart bike options below.

Worth saying clearly, because nobody documents it: I ride my Atom on TrainingPeaks Virtual every week and it pairs and controls without any fuss. Neither Wattbike nor TrainingPeaks lists the combination on their compatibility pages — Wattbike's own list of compatible apps doesn't mention TrainingPeaks Virtual at all — so if you've been put off because you couldn't find confirmation anywhere, this is it. It works over standard Bluetooth, same as everything else.

No wear and tear on your own bike. My road bike doesn't spend the winter bolted to a frame in the spare room, dripping sweat onto the headset. Over the years I've owned it, that alone has probably paid for a chunk of the bike.

It's always ready. No wheel off, no cassette, no faff. That sounds trivial. It is the single biggest reason I've been consistent indoors for years, and consistency is the whole point.

The Wattbike Hub app is genuinely useful. The free tier gives you Polar View — a real-time visualisation of your pedal stroke and a Pedal Effectiveness Score — plus benchmark and ramp testing, left/right balance, and exports to Strava and TrainingPeaks. As a coaching tool for fixing a lopsided or choppy pedal stroke, there's nothing like it on any other bike.

The honest downsides

I'd be doing you a disservice if I only gave you the good bits.

  • Fixed 170 mm cranks. No alternatives. If you're very short or very tall and ride a different crank length, that's a real limitation, and Wahoo's Kickr Bike offers adjustable cranks at a similar price.
  • The pedal-stroke analysis only lives in the Wattbike Hub app. Ride on Zwift and you don't see it. So you get the analytics or you get the game, not both in the same session.
  • Hub+ is a paid tier at £7.99/month. The core app is free, and that's how it's marketed — but custom workout building and importing .erg/.mrc workout files sit behind Hub+. If your coach sends you files, budget for it.
  • It's 45 kg. It doesn't get moved around.

Is the Wattbike Atom worth it?

For a committed indoor rider doing five or more hours a week through winter: yes, and I'd buy it again. The accuracy, the platform freedom, the lack of wear on your own bike, and UK-based support and servicing add up to something the cheaper options genuinely don't match.

For a rider doing two or three hours a week: no. Buy a Kickr Core 2 or a Van Rysel RCR and put the difference somewhere it'll make you faster.

And one more honest note: Wattbike's own Proton at £1,599 has the same ±1% accuracy, the same 25% gradient, the same 22 virtual gears, and fits riders from 4'6" to 6'6" — a wider range than the Atom. It tops out at 1,800W instead of 2,500W. Unless you're a sprinter or a heavy track rider, that ceiling will never limit you. If you want a Wattbike and the £650 matters, buy the Proton.

Zwift Ride vs Wattbike Atom

The Zwift Ride frame paired with a Kickr Core 2 costs £1,099.99, and goes on promotion regularly — around half the price of an Atom, and it's a proper smart bike setup. So why not just buy that?

Two reasons, and one of them is a genuine trap.

The trap: virtual shifting on the Zwift Ride works natively on Zwift and Rouvy, and nowhere else. The Zwift Ride has no mechanical shifters at all — gear changes are done in software via the Zwift Click. Ride on TrainerRoad, Wahoo SYSTM or TrainingPeaks Virtual, and those buttons do nothing on their own. TrainingPeaks Virtual can drive them through a third-party bridge app called BikeControl, which it officially partnered with in June 2026, but that's another app, another purchase and another thing to fail mid-session. You can fit a real cassette to get your gears back, but then the frame's buttons are dead weight.

That's the bit that would stop me. Buy the Zwift Ride and you've largely bought into Zwift — which is fine if that's where you want to be, but it's a decision you're making for the life of the bike, not just for this winter.

The second reason: accuracy. The Kickr Core 2 is rated ±2%; the Atom is ±1% and independently verified at about that. For most riders ±2% is fine. For anyone testing FTP regularly or comparing indoor to outdoor power, it isn't nothing.

My call: if you're certain you'll stay on Zwift, and 170 mm cranks suit you, the Zwift Ride is outstanding value and I'd struggle to argue anyone up to £2,249. If you want to keep your options open across platforms for the next five years, the Atom is the safer buy.

The specs that matter (and the ones that don't)

How accurate are smart trainers, and does ±1% matter?

Claimed accuracy runs from about ±1% on the best direct-drive units and smart bikes to ±5% on cheap wheel-on trainers. At 250 watts, ±1% is 2.5 watts and ±5% is 12.5 watts.

Here's what actually matters: consistency beats absolute accuracy. If your trainer reads 3% high every single session, your zones are set from it, your progress is measured against it, and the 3% cancels out. Where it bites is when you compare indoor power to an outdoor power meter, or when a trainer's readings drift as it heats up — which is exactly what the cheapest units do.

So: ±2% or better is enough for structured training. Below £400, look for a unit with a good independent test behind it rather than trusting the spec sheet.

Maximum power and gradient: how much do you need?

Most riders will never see 1,000 watts. A 1,500W ceiling is plenty for anyone who isn't sprinting competitively. Where the low-end units catch people out is the cheapest tier — Decathlon's D100 caps at 600W and 6% gradient, which is a hard wall, not a marketing footnote.

Gradient simulation is the same story. 16% covers almost everything on Zwift. 20–25% matters if you like the steep climbs or you're heavy and ride at low cadence.

How noisy is a turbo trainer?

If you're in a flat or a terraced house, this is a bigger deal than the spec sheet suggests. A modern direct-drive trainer at steady effort is quieter than a washing machine — the loudest thing in the room is usually your drivetrain and your fan. Wheel-on trainers are considerably louder because of tyre roar.

Put a mat under it regardless. Most of what your neighbours hear is vibration through the floor, not noise through the air.

Will it fit my bike?

Check three things before you buy a direct-drive trainer:

  1. Axle standard — quick release (130/135mm) or thru-axle (12x142/148mm). Most trainers include adapters; check yours is in the box.
  2. Cassette — direct-drive trainers need one, and they aren't always included. Match the speed (11, 12) and the brand. Shimano/SRAM HG is standard; SRAM XD/XDR and Shimano Micro Spline usually need a different freehub body, and Campagnolo often isn't supported at all on budget units.
  3. Disc brake spacer — if you run discs, you'll want one to stop the pads closing up while the wheel's out.

The trainers worth buying in 2026

Under £400

CYCPLUS R200 — around £369 ($399). Check price and availability (affiliate link)

The surprise of the budget category. road.cc scored it 10/10 in March 2026 at £368.74, testing it within 1–2% of a reference power meter. Direct drive, ±1% claimed, 2,200W ceiling, 18% gradient, Bluetooth and ANT+, and it's self-powered so there's no mains lead. It weighs 13.6 kg with a carry handle, which makes it one of the few direct-drive units you can genuinely move.

Watch out for: no cassette included, so budget another £40–£60. It won't take Campagnolo or Shimano Micro Spline. The plastic end caps are a bit fragile.

CYCPLUS is a Chinese brand that ships to the UK duty-paid from a European warehouse, so there's no surprise customs bill on the way in, and they offer a 2-year warranty and 30-day returns. Note that you pay return shipping if you send something back, which is the trade-off for the price. Prices on their site are shown in dollars. JetBlack Victory — £399. The pick if you'd rather buy through a UK retailer. ±2%, 1,800W, 16% gradient, and the best connectivity in the class: WiFi, Bluetooth FTMS, ANT+ FE-C and USB-C. BikeRadar made it their best overall pick in early 2026.

Van Rysel D500 — £399.99. Decathlon's revised 2025 unit, and the easiest to buy and return if something goes wrong — it's a high-street purchase. ±2.5%, 1,500W, 15%. Comes with a Zwift Cog and Click in the box.

Avoid at this price: anything wheel-on, and the Van Rysel D100 at £279.99 unless you're a pure endurance rider — that 600W and 6% ceiling is genuinely limiting.

£400–£700 — where most riders should land

Wahoo Kickr Core 2 — £499.99 RRP, around £449 at Sigma Sports. The safe answer, and the one I recommend most often. ±2% claimed and independent testing puts it inside 1.5% of reference power meters. 1,800W, 16% gradient, WiFi and Bluetooth and ANT+ FE-C, and Wahoo's app and firmware support is the most reliable in the business. Buy the version with a real cassette rather than the Zwift Cog unless you're certain you're staying on Zwift.

I'm no longer affiliated with Wahoo, so there's nothing in it for me either way — it's just still a very good trainer.

CYCPLUS T3 — around £625 ($799, reduced from $1,099). Check price (affiliate link)

More trainer per pound than anything else at the price: ±1% claimed, a 2,800W ceiling, 27% gradient, an 11-speed cassette already fitted, and dual cooling fans. road.cc gave it 7/10 and confirmed the accuracy against a Shimano dual-sided power meter.

The honest caveat: reviewers disagree on the noise — road.cc called it "pretty quiet", while Cyclists Hub measured around 62 dB at 200 watts and rated it noticeably louder than a Kickr. Both flagged the same thing on data: average power accuracy is excellent, but the instantaneous readings are more volatile and it's slower to settle in ERG mode. If you do a lot of short, sharp ERG intervals, spend the money on the Kickr Core 2 instead. If you do steadier work and want the biggest numbers per pound, the T3 is a lot of trainer.

£700–£1,300

Van Rysel RCR — £749.99. The best spec-per-pound of any trainer on sale in the UK: ±1% with no calibration required, 2,800W, 27% gradient, and a standard Ethernet port rather than a proprietary dongle. It undercuts trainers costing twice as much on paper.

Tacx Neo 3M — around £1,129 at Tredz at the time of writing. RRP varies wildly between retailers, so shop around on this one. The best ride feel money can buy. 25% gradient, road-surface simulation, motion plates, no calibration, and it works unplugged. If you want the trainer that feels least like a trainer, this is it.

Elite Justo 2 — £1,099.99. The accuracy benchmark: an optical torque sensor claiming under 1%, a 12-speed Shimano cassette in the box, 2,300W, 24% gradient, and every connection standard going.

Zwift Ride frame + Kickr Core 2 — £1,099.99. Outstanding value if you're staying on Zwift, and it goes on promotion regularly, so it's worth waiting for a sale. Read the platform-lock section above before you commit.

£1,300+ — smart bikes

Wattbike Proton — £1,599 (was £1,799). The value pick in the smart bike category. ±1%, 1,800W, 25% gradient, 22 virtual gears, fits riders from 4'6" to 6'6", no subscription for the core app.

Wahoo Kickr Bike Shift — £2,199.99 RRP, around £1,599 at Sigma Sports at the time of writing. Adjustable cranks, which the Wattbikes don't offer, and ±1% accuracy. At the discounted price it's arguably the best-value smart bike in the UK right now — though it's worth checking a few retailers, because the discount isn't universal.

CYCPLUS T7 Smart Bike — around £1,170–£1,380 ($1,499). Check price (affiliate link)

Worth knowing about: road.cc scored it 8/10 and called it well made and good to ride, with near-silent belt drive, tool-free multi-rider adjustment and customisable Shimano or SRAM shifter emulation. But: short 150–160 mm cranks, an Android app that has to be side-loaded rather than downloaded from the Play Store, and a lead time of around two months. It's a lot of smart bike for the money and a genuinely interesting option — just don't leave the order until November.

Don't buy: a Stages SB20. Stages ceased trading, and there's no support path.

What else you need

A fan. This is not optional. Not a desk fan — a proper one. Overheating will cost you more watts in a session than any trainer upgrade will ever give you back. Budget £40–£100 and put it at chest height.

A mat. Protects your floor, catches sweat, and cuts the vibration your downstairs neighbours hear.

A sweat guard and a towel. Sweat kills headset bearings and eats through headset top caps. If you're running your own bike on a trainer, this is cheap insurance.

A training platform. Budget for this properly — it's a running cost, not a one-off, and it makes more difference to your winter than the last £200 of trainer. See the next section.

Do you still need a power meter? Not to start. A smart trainer gives you power indoors, which is where structure matters most. Add an on-bike power meter when you want the same data outdoors — for racing, pacing long events, or time trialling.

Which training platform should you use?

The trainer is only half the purchase. What you run it on decides whether you actually train or just pedal.

What I use, and why

TrainingPeaks Virtual is my platform of choice, and it's what I ride weekly. The short version of why: it does everything the alternatives do, it costs less over a year, and it's the only one that gives you a full training analysis platform in the same subscription.

That last point is the one people miss. TrainingPeaks Virtual is included free with a TrainingPeaks Premium subscription. You aren't paying for a virtual world and then paying separately for somewhere to plan and analyse your training — it's one fee. Your prescribed session appears in the game automatically, and the completed ride lands back in TrainingPeaks with your Fitness, Fatigue and Form updated. No file shuffling, no exporting, no Strava in the middle.

What it costs

One honest caveat on that price: TrainingPeaks bills in US dollars — $134.99 a year for Premium, plus VAT — so the sterling figure moves with the exchange rate and your bank may add a foreign transaction fee. Budget around £120–£125 and you won't be far out. Pay annually. Monthly works out at roughly £18, which is no cheaper than Zwift and throws away the entire saving.

So you're looking at somewhere around £55 to £60 a year less than Zwift, and you get the training platform thrown in. For a rider who's going to be following any kind of structure, that's not a close call.

Is TrainingPeaks Virtual as good as Zwift?

For training, yes — and in some areas it's better. It has group rides, races, structured workouts with ERG, AI pacers, and real climbs including the Stelvio, Alpe d'Huez and the Snaefell Mountain Course. It'll also let you upload any GPX file and ride it, so you can recce a sportive route or a local hill climb course before you turn up to it. Zwift can't do that.

Two things it does noticeably better. Group rides use rubber-banding, so a mixed-ability bunch genuinely stays together instead of shattering in the first five minutes — which is why club and group riding works properly on it. And race integrity is a different level: real-time checks on height, weight and trainer calibration, riders removed mid-event if they're flagged, and an Elo-style rating split across sprinting, endurance, time trialling and climbing rather than a single watts-per-kilo category. It's much harder to sandbag.

Where Zwift still wins: there are simply more people on it. If you want a busy race at 7pm on a Tuesday without planning ahead, Zwift has the numbers and TrainingPeaks Virtual doesn't. You also can't jump into a race at the last second — you register into a pen beforehand. And if the gamified side is what gets you on the bike, the levels and unlockables and drops, TrainingPeaks Virtual deliberately doesn't do any of that.

One thing to be aware of either way: Garmin acquired TrainingPeaks in July 2026. Nothing has changed for users yet and the platform is still cross-compatible with everything, but it's a new owner and worth knowing before you commit a season to it.

Riding with Ride Harder

What about the others? TrainerRoad remains excellent if you want pure structure with no virtual world at all. Rouvy is the pick if you specifically want real-world video footage. MyWhoosh is free and has improved a lot, so if the budget is genuinely spent on the trainer, start there and upgrade later. None of them are bad choices — but if you're training with a plan, the TrainingPeaks route is the one that does two jobs for one fee.

Buying in the UK: timing and Cycle to Work

When's the best time to buy? Trainer prices fall hard from late October through Black Friday, which lands on 27 November 2026 this year. If you can wait, wait. If you can't, buy in September and get six weeks of training in — the fitness is worth more than the discount.

Cycle to Work: many trainers are eligible through schemes like Cyclescheme and the Green Commute Initiative, since they're classed as cycling equipment. Rules vary by employer and scheme, so check before you count on it — but on a £700 trainer it can be a meaningful saving.

Where to buy: Sigma Sports, Tredz, Decathlon and Wattbike direct all have proper UK returns and warranty handling. Buying direct from an overseas brand is usually fine and often cheaper, but your consumer rights are harder to enforce in practice. Buying via Amazon UK, where available, keeps that recourse simple.

Common mistakes I see riders make

Buying more trainer than training. The £2,000 bike doesn't do the sessions. I've coached riders to big PBs on £300 trainers and watched expensive smart bikes gather dust.

Skipping the fan. Every winter. It's the cheapest performance gain available and everybody underestimates it.

Living in ERG mode. Useful for intervals, terrible for developing the ability to hold power on your own. Come out of it regularly.

Never recalibrating. If your trainer needs a spin-down, do it. Monthly, and any time it's moved or the room temperature changes.

Setting zones from an outdoor test and training to them indoors. If your indoor power reads differently — and it usually does — test indoors and train indoors to those numbers. Keep the two sets separate.

Doing every session at the same moderate effort. The most common problem I see, indoors or out. Easy days easy, hard days hard.

Frequently asked questions

Is a turbo trainer worth it?

For any rider training through a UK winter, yes. It removes weather, darkness and traffic as excuses and lets you do precise, structured work. A £400 smart trainer used three times a week will do more for your fitness than almost any other purchase at that price.

Which turbo trainer should I buy as a beginner?

A direct-drive smart trainer between £350 and £500. The CYCPLUS R200 at around £369, the JetBlack Victory at £399 or the Wahoo Kickr Core 2 at £499.99 all do everything a new indoor rider needs, and none of them will need replacing as you get faster.

How much should I spend on a turbo trainer?

£400–£700 is the sweet spot for most club riders. Below £350 you start compromising on accuracy and ERG behaviour. Above £800 you're paying for ride feel and refinement rather than training benefit.

Do I need a cassette for a direct drive trainer?

Usually yes, and it isn't always included. Match your bike's speed and brand — 11 or 12 speed, Shimano/SRAM HG, SRAM XD/XDR or Shimano Micro Spline. Budget £40–£60 if it isn't in the box.

Will a turbo trainer damage my carbon frame?

No. Direct-drive trainers clamp the rear dropouts, which are designed to take load, and no mainstream frame manufacturer voids a warranty over it. Sweat is the actual risk — use a sweat guard and wipe the bike down afterwards.

Do turbo trainers ruin your tyres?

Wheel-on trainers do, quickly. Fit a dedicated trainer tyre or use an old wheel. Direct-drive trainers remove the rear wheel entirely, so there's no tyre wear at all.

How accurate are smart trainers?

Good direct-drive trainers claim ±1% to ±2%, and the better ones test close to that. Cheap wheel-on units are ±3–5%. Consistency matters more than the absolute number, as long as you set your training zones from the same device you train on.

Does turbo trainer power match my power meter?

Rarely exactly. A 2–5% difference between a trainer and an on-bike power meter is normal, caused by drivetrain losses and different measurement points. Pick one as your reference, set zones from it, and don't chase the gap.

Is a smart bike better than a turbo trainer?

Not automatically — it's a different trade-off. A smart bike costs more but saves your own bike from wear, adjusts for multiple riders in seconds and is always ready. A trainer is far cheaper and uses the bike you already own. Above about six hours a week indoors, the smart bike case gets strong.

Is the Wattbike Atom worth it?

For a committed indoor rider, yes. ±1% accuracy independently verified, works on every major platform with no lock-in, and there's zero wear on your own bike. At £2,249 it's a serious purchase — if you ride indoors under three hours a week, a £500 trainer plus a coach is the better spend. And Wattbike's own Proton at £1,599 gets you 90% of the bike.

Zwift Ride or Wattbike Atom?

The Zwift Ride is half the price and excellent if you're committed to Zwift. Its catch is that virtual shifting only works natively on Zwift and Rouvy — on TrainerRoad or Wahoo SYSTM the shifter buttons do nothing, and the frame has no mechanical shifters. The Atom costs more but works properly on any platform and is more accurate.

Is TrainingPeaks Virtual as good as Zwift?

For training purposes, yes. It has group rides, races, structured workouts with ERG, AI pacers and real climbs, plus the ability to ride any GPX route you upload. Its group rides use rubber-banding so mixed-ability bunches stay together, and its race integrity checking is stronger. Zwift's advantage is a much bigger user base, so busier racing at any given hour.

Is TrainingPeaks Virtual free?

It's included at no extra cost with a TrainingPeaks Premium subscription, which is about £120–£125 a year. It's also free to everyone on the first Tuesday of every month, and there's a 14-day free trial of Premium.

Is TrainingPeaks Virtual cheaper than Zwift?

Yes, if you pay annually. TrainingPeaks Premium is around £120–£125 a year against Zwift's £179.99, and the Premium subscription also includes the full TrainingPeaks planning and analysis platform. Paid monthly it works out around £18, which is no cheaper than Zwift.

Does the Wattbike Atom work with TrainingPeaks Virtual?

Yes. I ride mine on it every week. The Atom broadcasts standard Bluetooth FTMS, which is what TrainingPeaks Virtual uses to pair and control the resistance. Neither company lists the combination on their compatibility pages, but it works without any special setup.

What's the cheapest smart trainer that works with Zwift?

Around £260 gets you a direct-drive unit, but with real limits on maximum power and gradient. A realistic floor for a trainer you won't outgrow is £350–£400.

Do you need to change gears on a smart trainer?

In ERG mode, no — the trainer holds the target wattage whatever gear you're in. In simulation mode, or free-riding on Zwift, yes, exactly as you would outdoors.

Do I need a fan for turbo training?

Yes, and a proper one. Heat is the biggest limiter on indoor performance. A good fan is worth more real-world watts than upgrading from a £400 trainer to a £900 one.

How noisy is a turbo trainer — will my neighbours hear it?

A modern direct-drive trainer is roughly as loud as a washing machine on a spin cycle, and quieter than your fan. Most of what neighbours notice is floor vibration, so use a mat. Wheel-on trainers are much louder.

Is it OK to leave your bike on the turbo trainer?

Yes, structurally. Just clean it — dried sweat corrodes bolts, headset bearings and cables far faster than road use does.

When is the best time to buy a turbo trainer in the UK?

Black Friday, which falls on 27 November 2026, consistently brings the deepest discounts. Late September also sees pre-season promotions.

Can you get a turbo trainer on Cycle to Work?

Often yes — most schemes classify trainers as cycling equipment. Check with your employer and scheme provider first, as the rules vary.

How long should a turbo trainer session be?

45 to 75 minutes covers most quality indoor work. Anything over 90 minutes indoors has a poor effort-to-benefit ratio for most amateurs — save the long stuff for the road.

Is turbo training better than riding outside?

More efficient per minute, not better overall. An hour of structured indoor work is worth roughly 1.5 hours of typical road riding, but outdoor riding builds handling, pacing and durability that a trainer can't.
