Training for the Mallorca 312
Share
Have you entered the Mallorca 312 and aren't sure where to start with training? Having completed this event six times, I've put together my proven approach to training for the Mallorca 312 — so you make the cut-off and enjoy the ride.
When to start training for the Mallorca 312
The earlier you can start training for the event the better. That said, you want to make sure you keep building fitness through both intensity and volume all the way up to race day — Saturday 24th April 2027. There's no point starting training in October and then doing nothing through December and January, for example. Whenever you start, keep the motivation up right through to the event. A great way to do this is through some sort of accountability — either 1:1 coaching or simply following a structured training plan.
What training to do for the Mallorca 312
If you're starting around October, working on your aerobic base fitness is the place to begin. That means plenty of long, easy rides, which set you up for the higher-intensity sessions that come later. If you're not sure how to structure this, the Ride Harder Plan will teach you to ride efficiently and train smart — faster on the bike for LESS effort, with MORE spare time.
Here are my top 5 tips to complete the event in your fastest time!
#1 Consistency
As with any training plan, this is the most important factor. No matter how much you train, consistency is key, so don't delay getting started. The best training plan is only effective if it's actually executed. Find what works for you — whether that's hiring a coach or buying a training plan — both can give you accountability.
Long-term consistency trumps short-term intensity
#2 Plan, Plan and then Plan
To gain consistency you need to plan. Don't get obsessed with the exact details of individual sessions — look to build week on week and progress intensity. Get sessions in the diary so you don't miss any. A bird's-eye view of your training really helps keep you focused and on track. As you get closer to the event, start planning and practising your nutrition on your longer training sessions.
#3 Train Hard, Race Smart
The event is tough, so training needs to be tougher. If you're planning on making the cut-off times, you need to be prepared to push yourself on the day. Training for the Mallorca 312 should be tough — far too many riders shy away from the hard sessions.
It never gets easier, you just go faster
Once your training is complete, it's all down to what you do on the day. Being prepared is essential, and there are always ways to make the event easier by riding smart. I've learned a huge amount about this event since my first time riding it back in 2018, and I've shared all my top tips and advice in the Ultimate Race Day Guide.
The Ultimate Race Day Guide
This guide has been created with everything you need to know about completing the Mallorca 312. The event has been broken down into each section between the feed stops so all 8 sections of the event along with lots more content! This will make sure you are fully prepared to complete it within the time limit.
#4 Work on your Muscular Endurance
This is one of the key training abilities and it's crucial to completing this event. It's essentially the ability to apply constant force to the pedals over a long period. This event is tough and long, so you'll need plenty of this type of training in your plan. Long tempo and sweet spot efforts help build this — something I work on throughout the Mallorca 312 Academy and all the Mallorca 312 training plans.
#5 Specificity
As you get closer to the event, your sessions want to start simulating the physiological demands you'll face on the day. Don't worry if you don't have any iconic climbs where you live — this can be replicated. Introduce sessions where you drop your cadence to around 70rpm in a reasonably hard gear to mimic climbing.
