Become faster on the bike through strength training

Strength and mobility is one of the train smart principles that I include within my training programmes. I find this gives you a holistic approach to improving your cycling performance and ultimately makes you faster on the bike.

What is strength and conditioning?

“The physical preparation of athletes towards enhancing sports performance and reducing injury”

Often referred to as S&C this is a broad term that includes all aspects of physical strength, resistance training and mobility. It is found in aspects of a fit heathy body and should also be tailored to the individual sport which will aid performance.

How will it help improve my cycling performance?

It is important not only for power on the bike it is crucial that you have the necessary mobility and range of motion in your joints to push the power. This will limit time off the bike by aiding stabilisation to the muscles to keep them injury free.

Do you need to go to the gym and lift weights?

For the majority of amateur cyclists simple bodyweight resistance, core and mobility routines will aid performance. As you become stronger and more mobile, external resistance will be more advantageous and necessary to increase power gains.
