Athlete of the month (February) – Mark Freestone

This is the regular monthly article where I will pick an athlete of the month that I coach. It will not necessarily be the top performing athlete but one that I feel has dedicated themselves and achieved great things in there own personal quest to improve as an athlete.

Who I have chosen and why?

I had picked this client before his latest FTP test and then his result come in and I was totally amazed that he is now well into the 300+watt club! Mark had only just got into cycling last year and brought his first road bike when I met him and was instantly hooked. He joined my winter training programme and has been one of the most  committed members in the team. Even coming from a non cycling background he has embraced the training sessions and just got on with them getting the job done. He has increased his FTP by over 33% and now sits at an impressive 313watts in 4 months!  This just goes to show what is possible with hard work and dedication!

How long have you been cycling and what got you into it ?

Started cycling in may/June 2017 for charity ride London to Brighton to raise money for fishermen’s mission and been hooked ever since.

What’s your dream bike?

I guess the  s works venge as they look the business

What are your goals for 2018 ?

Finish the plan strong and then put it all to good use . Taking part in London to Rome with friends which is something I thought I would never be able to achieve and just enjoy the summer on the bike

What is your favourite Ride Harder training session ?

I enjoy the endurance sessions the best

Get on with it lol

What’s the best best piece of equipment you have purchased to help you improve as a cyclist ?

No equipment I don’t think as yet but has to be joining the ride harder group for sure

How have you improved since being coached ?

100% yes, couldn’t of done it by myself

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced since starting structured training and how have you overcome it ?

Energy levels as my job is physical but gaining an understanding of nutrition has helped I think thanks to Emma and other sources. I changed my diet and it became a lot easier

What one bit of advice would you give to someone who wants to improve their cycling?

Ring James Walsgrove . Train smart ride harder simple 👍
